PETALING JAYA (Nov 14, 2013): Former cabinet minister Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting said today that he is no longer receiving any remuneration from the government for his role as Malaysia's special envoy to China.
"As of Nov 1, I am performing this role entirely on a voluntary basis without any payment," he said when asked to comment on a motion in Parliament by opposition MPs calling for a pay cut of several special envoys and special government advisers.
"Take it as my national service," he quipped, adding he had earlier, on his own initiative, informed the prime minister of his intention to perform the role without pay.
As such, Ong said in response to his request, the government had in September issued him a new appointment letter where his service is without any remuneration or allowance.
